Five Types in Pediatric Care:

Identity, Diagnosis and Treatment
Each person can be characterized by a core-organizing phase - wood, fire, earth, metal and water - which we know as our type. How we come into being (ontology) and how we become sick (pathology) both reflect who we are (identity). This weekend will focus on the clinical skills necessary to identify five ways of being that impact how children express aptitudes and weakness, develop symptoms, and respond to care. It will elaborate on practical interventions developed by two leaders in Chinese medicine that have been integrated into a busy pediatric practice by Stephen Cowan, MD. Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and supplements will be used in the treatment of respiratory problems from earaches to asthma, digestive problems such as failure to thrive and tummy aches, and developmental problems that are labeled as ADHD or OCD.  Beinfield, Korngold and Cowan will provide didactic and experiential familiarity with the Five Types through slides, video presentation of six-month-old babies, and a dynamic group interaction.
